Time to get back to regular posting now that my short trip to Florida and the week-long tribute to JoePa have ended.  This iPhone4 shot is from my very early flight out of Newark on Wednesday. Getting up at 4AM to make the trip was the hard part.  The sunrise on takeoff made up for some of the sleep loss.

The W Hotel on the the riverfront in Hoboken NJ.  In addition to the usual hotel rooms and facilities a number of these spaces are owner occupied condominiums with fantastic views of the water and the NYC skyline.

The  Waiting Room in the Lackawanna Terminal, Hoboken NJ.  By my count about half the people visible in the photo appear to be in the “homeless” category, simply trying to find some warmth and rest in this public space on a very cold winter afternoon.  A sad commentary on economic and social conditions in our country today.

Ferry passengers who arrive at Slip 3 get this view of the recently renovated and restored Terminal building in Hoboken. Hanging sculpture of simple design. Huge graphic prints with historic themes. Wide and efficient public areas for safe and speedy access. Industrial architecture emphasizing strength and space. New Jerseyans should be proud of the image of our State that this facility represents.

One of the newly renovated and restored ferry slips in the historic Lackawanna Terminal complex, Hoboken NJ.Manhattan and the Hudson River are in the background. NJ Transit commuters get the choice of an underground ride on Path or a river cruise by ferry to lower Manhattan.

This funky looking establishment, more formally known as Uncle Vinnie’s Clam Bar, is near the center of town in Raritan NJ. Notice the careful color coordination between the delivery bike (left) and the storefront.

The Raritan River flows through Raritan Borough on its way past Bridgewater, Bound Brook, New Brunswick and on into Raritan Bay opposite Sandy Hook in New York Harbor.  The bridge above connects Raritan with Hillsborough over the river which forms the boundary between the two municipalities.  Although its a hazy, cold winter day. the sun and its reflection warms up the scene.

Since I was in the neighborhood and had my GF-1 with me I took a photo walk around downtown Raritan today.  Downtown is almost all there is to Raritan. Its a very small town tucked between Bridgewater, Hillsborough, Somerville and Branchburg NJ. I’m not sure of the age of this building … it could be very old or not for all I know.  But it had that vintage colonial look about it that stood out across the vacant lot in the foreground and set up nicely against the mostly cloudy sky behind.

This pristine stream is near the upper end of the Passaic River flowing through Basking Ridge NJ.  The source in Mendham flows into the remnant of a glacial lake which has devolved into the Great Swamp in Somerset County and wetlands through its central corridor.. The river meanders its way through and touches on Somerset, Union, Essex, Passaic and Bergen Counties to eventually empty into Newark Bay and the Hudson River. The lower Passaic has been heavily damaged by industrialization and pollution for more than a century but is slowly recovering through the efforts of both private and public resources.
