Our plant was brought in, pruned for winter and probably will not bloom again until Spring. This image caught the reflection of the last bloom in the mirror behind it.

A photo a day … more or less
Since this is (or has become) black and white week I thought I’d test the boundaries by using a floral image for today’s post. Generally speaking I’m usually drawn to floral subjects by their vivid colors and lush surroundings. I went through my flower and garden portfolio to find a suitable image and came up with one of my many home-bred hibiscus shots which I thought had the right combination of tonal range and texture for grayscale conversion. What do you think?

I brought in the Hibiscus plant today since it can’t tolerate temperatures lower than 50 degrees outside. Its been rehabbing the last year and a half after being ravaged by deer looking for a midnight snack on our rear patio last year. Its made amazing progress to the point where its about to blossom into numbers of blooms like the one below over this year’s winter indoor season.

Remember that shot of the hibiscus bud I posted last week? Well here it is in all its blooming glory.

I shot this yesterday with my new Macro lens, handheld in available window light. The shallow depth of field of this lens created the soft red background from a close-by hibiscus bloom. Given the circumstances this is an ok image, but it really serves to prove the old adage that if you want a sharp macro photo get a tripod !
