Gallery – 500 Hudson Street, Hoboken NJ.
The building at 500 Hudson Street in Hoboken is a 5-story, 19th Century multi-family structure that sits across from Steven’s Tech on one side and a public park and playground on the other. The front garden (above) caught my eye first with its early spring jumble of plants and shrubs surrounding a blue-green doorway set in a pastel painted brick front. After I took this shot I decided to walk up 5th street which took me past the side entrance (below).
The side entrance had a small brick stoop with a decorative black wrought iron handrail but that’s not what caught my attention. It was the plaque. At first I thought it was just another historic marker but it turned out to be something quite different and special for anyone with an interest in fine art photography, especially its historic roots and greatest practitioners. Alfred Stieglitz, a master of photography, colleague of Edward Steichen, Paul Strand and Edward Weston to name a few and husband of artist Georgia O’Keeffe was born in this building in 1864. A close-up of the plaque is below.
